Practical - Other Equipment

You can think of lots of things that you might want to take along, though we advice to limit to the essentials; the happy traveller travels light.

Things you definitely will need though:

  • Camping equipment: a tent, sleeping bag, blanket, tarp, mosquito net (impregnated versions are on the market), mosquito coils, candles, a torch (preferably one without batteries; e.g. Proteam LED Dynamo Torch,) cooking equipment (we are bringing pots and pans along but extra is always welcome,) a cup, a plate, cutlery, a clothes repair kit, sunscreen (may be harder to obtain in certain countries.) A water filter may also be a good investment.
  • Proper clothing. We advise you not to overdo things though. The coldest part of the journey will probably be the first months, especially the U.K. leg. Best may be some (worn or second-hand) clothes that - as soon as... you can easily dispose off without any regrets.
  • High viz vests can serve as raincoats as well. Warning though: we recently learnt yellow high-viz and rain coats attract insects.
  • Shoes that you're comfortable cycling with, sandals.
  • General hygiene equipment that you wouldn't want to go without.
  • First aid kit (bandages, scissors, safety pins, tweezers, adhesive tape,...).
