Do
we have to do the whole journey?
-Obviously not; we understand that not everyone has the possibility and/or
the financial means to just take off for nearly a whole year. Only a limited
amount of people will be able to do the whole trip. But anyone who feels
like joining us - be it just for the day, a few weeks, a few months, as
long as we're in their country: it's all good. We will have some people
joining the caravan from countries that we're not crossing directly. And
as we're just a loose affiliation of people that have decided to go on
a journey together and do not - from the legal point of view - provide
any services we do not charge any participation fee either. Everyone does
the journey at their own risk and the only drawback is that we cannot
take responsability of unaccompanied minors.
It is an awareness campaign, so the more people that join in, the bigger
the potential impact.
How
can I prepare? Do I need to be physically fit?
-If you use your bicycle on a regular basis, and do a bit of training
beforehand you should be fine. Some people do this journey in 6 months.
We are conceiving this journey in such a way that anyone with a normal
level of fitness can easily take part. On average we will be cycling 4
to 5 hours, at a leisurely pace. That would bring us to about 30 miles
/ 50 kms per day. And plenty of time left to check out the area, interact
with the local population, get food, etc. On hot days we will mainly cycle
in the morning. We will take one or two days rest every week, and every
now and then we will take longer breaks.
Is
the whole journey planned already?
-Obviously not. We have decided on most of the route we're taking and
some of the places where we will stay overnight, but we don't want to
stick to a rigid too rigid schedule. Some days - depending on how the
group feels - we may decide on cycling a bit further than planned. While
at other times when we find a good place to camp we may decide to cover
less distance.
Costs?
Insurance?
-This whole project is being done on a voluntary basis, we don't charge
anyone wanting to take part. But we expect everyone to be able to take
care of their own financial needs (e.g. for visa and general costs.) We
will however do it as cheaply as possible. This journey is about being
close to nature and thus as much as possible we want to camp in forests,
fields, at farms. So unless there is no other way around it we want to
avoid (spending lots of money on) guest-houses, youth hostels, campings,
etc.
-For food we were thinking of sharing a raw-food breakfast and doing some
vegetarian/vegan cooking in the evenings.
-The trip is long, and there's always something that can go wrong. So
we do advice - especially when you're thinking of joining us outside of
your own country - to take a good third-party and travel/medical insurance.
How
many people are taking part?
-Only a limited amount of people have pledged to do the whole trip; others
will join as we go along. Quite a few people have expressed interest for
the Asian leg. We're expecting the caravan to grow as we go along.
How
can I help?
-first of all you can try to interest other people for the trip. Maybe
mention it to them, refer to the website.
-We have developed a flyer that can easily be downloaded and printed on
A-4 format (or more on one page.) It looks better on recycled paper as
well. Please don't waste it though. Click
for download.
-if you know people with land / a forest / farm along the way where we
would be welcome to stay. Or if you can supply us with other usefull information
/ grassroots campaign groups that might be worth contacting then pls let
us know.
